Use of Structural Steel in Construction
STRUCTURAL STEEL HAS AN ENVIABLE reputation of being the prime construction material of modern times. Several landmark structures such as the Forth Bridge (1886), the Eiffle Tower (1889), the Empire State Building (1931), the Golden Gate Bridge (1937) have stood the test of time to underscore the reputation of steel. In India, the Pamban Bridge (1916) and the Howrah Bridge (1943) are well known among the countless steel bridges in the country. More recent structures such as the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, The Great Belt Bridge and the Petronas and Taipei 101 towers are testimonies to the future of steel in construction. In spite of these advantages, steel construction in India has not come of age due to several reasons.

In this paper, the various issues which have prevented the widespread use of steel in Indian construction industry are looked into and corrective measures are suggested to reap the benefits of using steel in construction which can have a significant impact on the economic progress. Advantages of Steel in Construction For the efficient use of any material, its advantages need to be clearly understood and so the points mentioned above will now be elaborated. Steel has a high strength to weight ratio which means the amount of material required to resist a particular load action will be significantly less thereby reducing the self weight of structures and freeing more space for other functional use.

For the same weight, steel is three times stronger than concrete in compression and thirty five times stronger in tension. However, this advantage looks less attractive when we look at the
strength to cost ratio. For the same cost, steel is more than half as strong as concrete in compression and five times stronger in tension. Thus, steel will be economical for long span and tall structures as well as structures with members in bending and tension. Thus steel can be competitive for office and industrial buildings as well as for buildings with more than five stories but not for low to medium rise residential buildings.
